ABOUT THE PROJECT
This emotional regulation tool book is the culmination of a year-long creative wellness journey undertaken by a group of young adults with autism, all of whom attend EPIC Social Care CIC.
Funded by the National Lottery, this project was born from a shared vision: to foster greater understanding of how people with autism experience and express emotions differently from their neurotypical peers and how participants can help others through their own experiences.
Through weekly sessions focused on mindfulness, colour theory and reflection, we found what works for our EPIC group. That is reflected in the activities in the book we have created. They have been tried and tested and the benefits of long term use have been witnessed not just by the EPIC team, but also external support networks, parents and carers.
Emotional regulation can often be a daily challenge for people with neurodivergent minds, particularly when navigating sensory overload, transitions or unexpected change. This book offers practical tools and creative exercises that are designed to help build emotional awareness and develop calming strategies in a supportive, enjoyable way.
Engaging regularly with these activities will help to build confidence, support independence and increase emotional resilience. Over time, this can lead to a stronger sense of self-regulation, better communication of needs and more positive relationships.
For carers, parents and support workers, the book offers a shared framework to better understand and connect with those they support, encouraging more meaningful interactions and reducing daily stress.

These videos have become an integral part of our Monday morning routine here in EPIC. Our group look forward to starting the week with calm, grounding exercises that benefit both the mind and body.
The colour breathing videos can also be effective during moments of stress or for use before bed to open conversation and allow time to reflect on the day.
